A home with bay windows has more personality and is more spacious

The setting was ideal. The living room of our California ranch-style home included a wide picture window. The window reached all the way up to within a few feet of the cathedral ceiling. The walls, ceiling, and floor were all a knotty pine that had been stained a redwood color. The view from the window included the expansive front lawn, a flower bed, and some shrubs. A bay window could be installed there because it was the ideal size and shape.

The window is almost a perfect square. It measured 72 by 72 inches. We thought about putting in a bow window, but ultimately decided on bay windows. We decided that a three-panel bay window, rather than a multi-panel bow window, would be a better fit for the aesthetic of our home. We had planned to move the potted plants from in front of the existing picture window to the seat board of the bay. The new layout would increase our usable space and modernize the look of the house. Time for some retail therapy!

Original versus Stock

When we originally discussed replacing the window, I started looking at bay window designs. Looking around in various publications and online, I was able to get multiple guides on how to construct a bay window from scratch. In addition, I realized that it would be pointless to pursue such an endeavor. Major window manufacturers like Pella, Milgard, and Anderson all produce both finished bay windows and bay window components that require no assembly.

Very few companies nowadays will undertake the task of custom-making a bay or bow window. It would be impractical when a high-quality pre-built window can be installed for the same or less money. We reasoned that if builders and renovators commonly utilize prefabricated windows and other materials, we should be able to do the same for our own home.

DIYers can easily handle the installation of a bay window. However, you may wish to hire a professional for assistance before attempting a do-it-yourself approach. You won't be able to get this done in a single weekend day. For that matter, you probably won't be able to finish it in a weekend.

You should also get some assistance ready. The parts and the whole bay window are quite hefty. Thankfully, they are too bulky for a single individual to handle.

Check both the short-term and long-term weather forecasts. When you put in a window, you literally have to cut a hole in your wall. Installing a new window and getting it sealed can take a few days. Rain pouring in on your floor, walls, and furniture is the last thing you need.

Always double-check the building regulations in effect in your area. Safety glass in low-profile windows, for example, may be obligatory in some jurisdictions. You should look into the regulations now because you will likely need a building permit.

Equipment and Supplies Required

You will need a tape measure, a framing square (which may double as a straight edge), a circular saw or miter saw, crow bars, a drill and bits, a level, a stapler, a utility knife, tin snips, and a caulking gun for this project.

You'll need the bay window itself, as well as the brackets to hold it in place, nails, roofing paper, shingles, roofing nails, exterior-grade silicone caulking, and fiberglass insulation. For the window casings, you'll also need 1x6 boards. You will also need 2X4s for cripple studs and additional framing if you are expanding an existing window or putting the window in a place that was once the wall.

Simple Methods of Setup

Create a hole for the window in the wall. Get rid of the old window. Mark the exterior of the home where the new window will go by measuring the bay window's opening. Make the necessary hole with your circular saw.

On Sunday night, we finished up the roofing and skirting and put in the new window. On Monday afternoon, I finished weatherproofing the exterior and finishing the interior trim.

And we were correct. A bay window would look great there. From the outside, it appeared to be perfect. Once brought inside, it served as the room's center point and gave the home an air of unique character. The window improved the aesthetics and monetary worth of the home.

It was one of the selling points that helped bring in a higher price for the home.
